Chinese
Studies

Mandarin is the standardised language spoken by millions around the globe, serving as a gateway to rich Chinese language and culture. At Anfield St. Bosco Koon Ying School, we offer a dynamic Chinese Studies programme that immerses pupils in a variety of engaging activities focused on speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Our daily lessons are designed to be interactive and enjoyable, incorporating phonetics, vocabulary, and sentence structure through songs, stories, sensory activities, movement, and hands-on arts and crafts. We teach using traditional Chinese characters and employ thematic, context-based approaches to make learning relevant and meaningful.

Pupils have numerous opportunities to engage with Chinese culture and traditions, participating in vibrant celebrations such as the Chinese New Year Assembly, Lion Dance and Lantern Festival.

Learning focus

Learning focus

In order to help pupils begin reading Chinese characters, the focus is on making it fun and engaging. By starting with simple, frequently used characters and introducing them through activities like flashcards, picture books, and games, pupils gradually build their vocabulary.

Writing activities provide opportunities for pupils to explore and appreciate the differences and similarities between western and chinese cultures. Using traditional chinese characters, pupils learn the correct structure to each of the characters and the stroke order.

Speaking and listening activities are designed to cultivate communication skills, enhancing pupils’ ability to express themselves confidently in Mandarin. Through a wide range of activities and performances, pupils are encouraged to apply them to real life; connecting language learning to real-world contexts and communities.
