Educating Hearts & Minds
At Anfield School, our Chinese Studies curriculum is designed to accommodate our students’ diverse language backgrounds. We teach Mandarin using traditional Chinese characters, focusing on speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural understanding. We employ a range of teaching methods tailored to individual learning needs.
We utilise a progressive teaching system and an interdisciplinary integration approach, actively cultivating children’s cultural literacy. Emphasising experiential learning, we provide opportunities for students to engage in real-life cultural experiences. Each year, students enhance their exploration and critical thinking skills through practical activities, including:
• Chinese New Year’s Assembly
• Lantern Festival Performance
• Field trips
• Chinese Battle of the Books Competition
• Mandarin Speech Competitions (internal and external)
• Calligraphy Competition

Our Mandarin Curriculum is continually updated to reflect current trends. We incorporate the 17 SGDs (Sustainable Development Goals) into our curriculum, using innovative teaching models such as “The Mantle of the Expert” and Kagan cooperative learning. These methods make learning Mandarin enjoyable and foster confidence, broadening students’ international perspectives and enhancing their understanding of the world. Similar to how children progress with their phonics from kindergarten to primary, their skills of characters and pinyin also develop within the writing curriculum for Mandarin. The children learn to recognise, read and write both characters and pinyin. The expectations for writing characters progress as the children transition to each year group, further developing their Mandarin linguistic skills.
Our Mandarin teachers are highly professional, focusing not only on educational outcomes but also on each child’s spiritual growth. Mindfulness meditation activities in the classroom are particularly popular among students. At Anfield, Mandarin is more than just a communication tool; it is a means of thought expression and a bridge to the future.
