Educating Hearts & Minds
Mandarin is a globally significant language facilitating communication across borders and is the key to understanding Chinese culture. At Anfield our children have daily Mandarin lessons, lasting from 15-45 minutes (depending on age). We teach traditional Mandarin characters to the children. Learning Mandarin allows the children to learn more about Chinese culture as well as the language itself.
The children follow themes in their Mandarin lessons which link to the learning in their English class. We teach the children Chinese vocabulary, recognition of some of the traditional Mandarin characters and how to form the early strokes of the characters.
The learning is progressive throughout the year groups and takes into account the differing levels of Mandarin our children may have. The teachers are able to ensure all children learn and make progress whether Mandarin is the child’s first language or an unknown language.
We use a wide variety of songs, actions, dancing and engagement in play experiences to expose our young learners to the language and culture. Developing simple key vocabulary used in everyday life and linked to thematic learning.

The children continue to develop their speaking and listening skills through the introduction of single words, short phrases and simple sentences. The use of simple rhymes and songs enhance the learning experience and link to thematic learning experiences and cultural integration e.g. Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, Chinese New Year etc.
Once the children reach K2 level they are developing their speaking and listening skills to enable them to follow simple instructions and carry out tasks more independently in Mandarin. They are encouraged to develop their pronunciation and begin to construct simple sentences, ask simple questions, make requests and comment on stories used in class.
Songs, actions and rhymes continue to be used and the introduction of characters encourages the link between the written language and spoken word. Similar to how children progress with their phonics, their skills of characters and pinyin also develop within the writing curriculum for Mandarin. The children learn to recognise, read and write both characters and pinyin.
